Sumatra

Situated on the western rim of the archipelago, Sumatra is the largest island which is fully within Indonesian territory, as well as the sixth largest island in the world. For centuries, Sumatra was the gateway for maritime trade throughout Southeast Asia, and this foreign influence can be seen through the rich tapestry of the island. From the devout Muslim people of northern Aceh, to the Batak Christians living around Lake Toba (Southeast Asia’s largest lake), it is a culture that is as diverse and interesting as the landscape.

A travel haven for nature-lovers, Sumatra boasts numerous unspoilt beaches as well as 11 national parks which provide sanctuary for endangered wild tigers, elephants, rhinoceros and orangutans. It is also where you can find the world’s largest (and smelliest) flower – the Rafflesia Arnoldii which grows up to a staggering 1-metre wide and tips the scales at a whopping 7kg! For adventurers looking for something beyond the ordinary, this is one island that intrepid travellers can’t afford to miss out on!
