Sulawesi

With its distinctive shape, Sulawesi sits to the east of Borneo and is made up of several long peninsulas that sprawl out from its mountainous centre. Split into six provinces, the country is actually situated closer to the Philippines than many of its Indonesian neighbouring islands.

Known for its mesmerising coral reefs and dive sites, such as the Bunaken National Park and Wakatobi – a UNESCO Marine Reserve – Sulawesi has plenty to quench the thirst of the most inquisitive of divers. The tropical and varied landscape of the island has created unique plant and animal diversity, with many species found here that only exist on Sulawesi! Islam is the dominant religion on the island, although Christianity is also widely practised by those living in the eastern part of the province. Whilst there are many different ethnic groups found throughout Sulawesi, the Torajan tribe are perhaps the most renowned – thanks to their distinctive Tongkonan houses and elaborate funeral rituals. With its treasure trove of uncharted and off-the-beaten-track experiences, Sulawesi is an authentic slice of Indonesia just waiting to be discovered.
