Papua
Known as the final frontier and ‘Wild West’ of Indonesia, Papua’s rich tribal traditions span thousands of years. From the exotic underwater marine life of Raja Ampat, to some of the richest biodiversity in the world – Papua (formally known as Irian Jaya) truly offers some of the most stunning scenery on the planet.
As the second largest island in the world, the territory is split between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea – the result of this has created ongoing political tension and means that some more isolated and rural areas are not recommended for tourists to travel to without a guide. Although Christianity is the main faith, Papua is also home to over 300 different tribes – with some still totally isolated from the outside world! One thing’s for sure, with its staggering mountain ranges, glistening white beaches and lush rainforests – there is nowhere else quite like Papua to show you the true untamed spirit of Indonesia!
