Sandy beaches lined with coconut palms and total Robinson Crusoe vibes… If you’re ready to swap the buzzing Bali mainland for something a little more laid-back, Gili Gede is the slice of tropical paradise you’ve dreamed about.

Part of the ‘Secret Gilis’, a cluster of a dozen or so small islands off the southwest coast of Lombok, Gili Gede (meaning “Big Island”) is only a few kilometres long. But what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm.

Gili Gede Part of Secret Gilis

Here, it’s all about soft white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and local life that still beats to an authentic island rhythm. Gili Gede is where time slows down, Wi-Fi is optional, and the loudest sound you’ll hear is the splash of your snorkel hitting the water.

If you’ve been dreaming of escaping the crowds and experiencing a more rustic side of the archipelago, this might just be the barefoot adventure you’ve been craving!

How to Get to Gili Gede

How to Get to Gili Gede

Getting to Gili Gede is part of the adventure, and luckily it’s easier than you may think! From mainland Bali, the most popular option is jumping on board a fast boat with Gili Getaway. It departs from Serangan Harbour just south of Sanur, stopping at Nusa Penida before arriving at Gili Gede in around 2 hours (depending on the weather). Departure times vary throughout the year, so it’s best to check directly with the company before planning your journey.

If you’d prefer to fly from Bali, in just 45-50 minutes, you’ll arrive at Lombok International Airport. Then, jump in a taxi or private hire car for the 1.5-hour drive to Tembowong Harbour on the south of the island, where local boats make the short hop across to Gili Gede.

It’s worth noting that many of the resorts are happy to organise these transfers for you, making the journey seamless and stress-free. Just a few hours of travel, and you’ll be straight into island-mode!

Things To Do in Gili Gede

This might be a tiny island, but Gili Gede has plenty of activities to keep you smiling between naps in your hammock.

1) Snorkel or Dive Amongst the Pristine Reefs

The waters around Gili Gede are ridiculously clear and absolutely teeming with coral gardens, reef fish and even the occasional friendly turtle. You don’t even need a boat – simply grab your mask and fins and head straight in from the shore.

For those who are keen to go a little deeper, Gili Gede is surrounded by incredible dive sites just a short boat ride away. Beginner-friendly and also plenty to keep seasoned divers happy, expect colourful coral walls and technicolour fish for a touch of underwater magic.

Top Tips for Visiting Gili Gede

Gili Gede Travel Tips
  • Cash is king – there are no ATMs on Gili Gede, so bring enough IDR to cover meals, drinks and activities. Whilst there is Wi-Fi on the island, the connection can be sketchy, so it’s best not to solely rely on online transfers and card payments.
  • Pack light & smart – Gili Gede is laid-back and rustic, so flip-flops, swimmers, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito spray and light items of clothing are all you need.
  • Snorkel gear – Whilst rentals are available, if you have your own mask and fins, you may want to bring them along for comfort.
  • Embrace island time – as previously mentioned, electricity and Wi-Fi can be patchy. Use it as an excuse to switch-off, slow down and soak in the sunsets and chilled island vibes.
  • Sunset spot check – the west side of the island offers some of the most stunning sunset views. So grab a drink, find a sandy patch and settle in for Mother Nature’s show.
  • Mind the wildlife – curious crabs, colourful fish and even the occasional turtle are part of everyday life. Admire, don’t disturb, and remember that you’re a guest in their home.
  • Be prepared – bring a mini medical kit with a few basics like plasters, painkillers, antihistamines and seasick meds to keep minor scrapes and sniffles from ruining your island vibes.

Final Words

If you’re craving an island escape that feels worlds away from Bali’s bustle but is still easy to reach, you can’t go wrong with Gili Gede. It’s authentic, relaxed and unspoilt – the kind of place that reminds you what travelling to Indonesia is all about.

So pack light, slow down and let island life work its magic. Gili Gede might be small, but it’s got a big heart – and is ready to steal yours!
