Kalimantan

As the third largest island in the world, Kalimantan is the name of the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Shared with Malaysia and Brunei, Kalimantan contains some of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world, at an estimated 130 million years old. With its unique natural beauty, it is easy to see why those with a love of adventure flock to the island.

Split into 5 provinces, Kalimantan makes up 28% of the area of Indonesia but only accounts for 5% of the population – with the Dayak tribe being the original inhabitants of the island. If you enjoy exploring new cultures, why not visit one of the traditional Dayak villages in Kalimantan to give you an authentic taste of indigenous life? Whilst most of the island embraces Islam, other religions are also represented, reflecting the diversity of the many migrants that call Kalimantan home.

The natural beauty of Kalimantan is what attracts many visitors, with the majority hoping to spy some of the rare and endangered species that roam the rainforests there – such as orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, elephants, rhinos, porcupines, deer, and Clouded Leopards. Boat trips down the winding jungle rivers and national parks are always a popular attraction – with Camp Leakey in the heart of the Tanjung Puting National Park being one of the most renowned. With plenty of unspoiled beaches and rugged mountains, Kalimantan is guaranteed to bring out the explorer in you!
