We know you’re already excited to visit Yogyakarta, so without further ado, let’s get started!

Where is Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta, or Jogja as it is often called, is the capital city of The Special Region of Yogyakarta and part of the island of Java. It is located to the south and surrounded by Central Java and the Indian Ocean. The Special Region of Yogyakarta is separated into four districts – Sleman, Kulon Progo, Gunungkidul, and Bantul – with a capital city, Yogyakarta, at its centre.

Why visit Yogyakarta

The Special Region of Yogyakarta is certainly a unique spot and has an added charm as being the only region in Indonesia that has a Javanese monarchy. The city is governed by the Yogyakarta Sultanate, led by Hamengkubuwono X who is the head of the royal family. Visitors to Joga will love the amazing blend of the royal palaces and traditional lifestyle, mixed with modern vibes.

But that’s not all! Jogja thrives as a vibrant hub of Javanese fine arts and rich culture, with batik-making, silver crafts, wayang puppetry, literature, ballet and music all woven into the city’s vibrant fabric. And this remarkable region carries a rich historical legacy, tracing its roots back to the days of the Mataram Kingdom. One thing’s for sure, Jogja’s ancient buildings, prominent landmarks and stunning monuments are guaranteed to leave a lasting memory.

Yogyakarta has also gained fame as a renowned student city in Indonesia and is home to some top-notch educational institutions such as Universitas Gadjah Mada, which is also popular with international students. And if you’re up for a little adventure, there’s the opportunity to take part in a thrilling hike to Mount Merapi – an active volcano located in the north of the city. Not only that, Jogja is home to not one, but two remarkable UNESCO temple sites – Borobudur and Prambanan – two architectural wonders that are considered to be amongst some of the finest in the world!

So if you’re on the lookout for culture-packed adventure, Yogyakarta tourism has plenty to discover. Experience spiritual moments, drool-worthy cuisine, diverse local traditions, bustling marketplaces, thrilling activities, and plenty of Instaworthy views too – and all at an affordable budget!

How to Get to Yogyakarta

There are heaps of ways to travel to Jogja by air or land, depending on your starting point:

Flying

If you’re coming from a different country, then boarding an aeroplane to Yogyakarta airport will be the easiest option. But be aware, The Special Region of Yogyakarta has two airports. The original airport is Adisutjipto International Airport, which is conveniently situated near the city centre of Jogja. The newer airport is Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) which is located in the Kulon Progo district and offers a more extensive and modern facility compared to the older airport.

If you’re arriving at YIA, you will need to arrange a Yogyakarta airport transfer to reach the city centre. You can travel by car, Grab or the airport train – which is the most affordable and the fastest mode of transportation.

An airport train ticket costs between IDR 20,000 and 50,000, and the trip from Yogyakarta airport to city central will take around 40 minutes. To get your ticket, visit the website or simply download the ‘KA Bandara’ app on Google Play or Playstore. Choose ‘Yogyakarta international airport’ as your starting point and ‘Yogyakarta’ as your destination on the app, pick a suitable time, and get ready to board the train! You will arrive at Yogyakarta Station near the famous Malioboro Street and then you can book a ride with Grab from their meeting point at the station to your hotel.

It’s important to note that during peak seasons, airport train tickets can sell out quickly, especially for same-day purchases – so it’s better to secure your ticket a week in advance. Also, as YIA is quite spacious, you may need to allocate extra time for walking to the baggage claim area. So, when planning your airport train schedule we’d recommend factoring-in sufficient time for your arrival and baggage collection.

The most popular land transportation options include buses and trains. There is also the option to rent a car if you prefer. If you’re travelling from other Indonesian cities in Java such as Jakarta, Bandung, Solo, Semarang and Surabaya, land transportation is a much more affordable option.

Bus

You can choose from VIP, Business, and Sleeper Bus options for bus travel. Although it’s cheaper, the Sleeper Bus offers a more limited selection of routes. It’s important to note that the trip from Jakarta to Jogja typically takes around 13 hours, compared to travel times from Bandung and Surabaya. But if you’re departing from Solo, then the travel time is significantly shorter at around only 2 hours. Similarly, from Semarang, the drive to Jogja takes approximately 4 hours, making it a relatively faster option.

Train

If you prefer a faster mode of transportation, trains are an excellent choice, offering a range of classes to suit different budgets. The most budget-friendly option is the Economy class, while Executive, Business, and Luxury classes provide more comfortable seating and some additional amenities. The train journey from Bandung and Jakarta to Jogja typically takes approximately 8 hours, whereas it’s about 4 hours from Surabaya and Semarang.

If you’re travelling from Jogja’s twin city, Solo, the trip is even quicker, lasting only around 1 hour on the KRL commuter line. This option is also much more affordable for those on a tight budget!

Best travel times

To create the perfect itinerary for your trip to Jogja, it’s important to take into account the timing and weather conditions, including the Yogyakarta climate and crowds. Jogja experiences two main seasons: wet and dry. During the wet season, the temperature in Yogyakarta can become humid and hot. So, we suggest selecting your travel dates during the dry season for a more comfortable experience.

Usually, the wet season lasts from September to April. Whereas, the dry season usually occurs between April and October. Even so, it’s better to avoid visiting Jogja during its July peak season and at the end of December until after the New Year. However, if you’re looking for a bustling Jogja atmosphere, June will be a perfect time to go there as well as November – just before the city becomes too crowded during the December holiday season.
