When most people think of an Indonesian holiday, Bali naturally steals the spotlight. But what if your next wellness escape was simply a short 1.5-hour flight away from the Island Of The Gods?

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Stay Review

Tucked amongst lush greenery and just 11km from the main city, Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta offers visitors a completely different side of Indonesia. One where mornings begin with birdsong, afternoons are spent immersed in local culture, and evenings end with massages, meditation and exceptional food.

We were excited to check out of Bali’s buzzing energy for a couple of nights and into something more reflective. Over the next few days, we immersed ourselves in wellness experiences, rich culture and authentic hospitality at this holistic Jogja hideaway.

A Warm Welcome to the Garrya Family

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that wellness isn’t simply an add-on at Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta – it’s woven into every part of the guest experience.

Check-in was smooth and genuinely welcoming, with smiling staff greeting us as though we were returning friends rather than first-time visitors. A refreshing welcome drink of fresh pineapple and cinnamon arrived alongside a chilled towel, instantly washing away all remnants of travel fatigue.

To officially welcome us into the Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta family and mark the beginning of our Yogyakarta wellness escape, we were presented with charming chakra bracelets. It was a small gesture, but one that perfectly set the tone for the mindful stay ahead.

Set amongst tall trees and the gentle hum of nature, the resort’s surroundings immediately felt worlds away from the bustle of everyday life.

A Villa Haven Designed For Switching Off

Pool View Villa Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta

From the very start, it was clear that Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta is a boutique-style haven that oozes tranquillity. The resort offers a collection of thoughtfully designed accommodation types, including Sunset View Villas, River View Villas, generous 2-bedroom Pool Villas and serene Wellbeing Sanctuary Villas.

For our stay, we checked into the Pool View Villa, which was tucked away in a peaceful corner of the resort. Stepping inside felt more like entering a stylish private apartment than a hotel room. The villa was open and spacious, with a large plush bed, a separate dressing area, an elegant bathroom complete with double sinks and large stone bathtub, plus a comfy lounge area for relaxing between activities.

Outside, the private pool quickly became our favourite spot to chill. Cocooned by greenery and complete with loungers for lazy afternoons, it was the perfect place to unwind after busy mornings exploring.

To top things off, there were also complimentary beverages and snacks waiting in the villa – always a welcome touch after a day of travel.

Nourishing Mornings at Garrya Bianti

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Breakfast at Refresh Restaurant

Each morning began with a buffet breakfast at Refresh Restaurant, showcasing an impressive mixture of local and Western favourites to start the day. They had everything from hash browns, beef bacon and smoked salmon, to freshly made waffles, pancakes, cereals and fruits.

The real highlight, however, had to be Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta’s famous cage-free eggs, sourced from the resort’s nearby sustainable farm. We loved seeing how sustainability wasn’t just a buzzword here. The resort actively supports local communities through eco-led initiatives and responsible farming practices, creating a dining experience with a heart.

Afternoon Tea Above the Jungle Canopy

As the afternoon sun softened, we made our way to Kopi Zop. Positioned near the resort’s main swimming pool and perched just above the treeline, it might just be one of the most relaxing spots on the property.

The golden afternoon light filtered through the surrounding jungle whilst gentle lounge music mixed with soothing sounds of the river below. Garrya’s signature Afternoon Tea includes your choice of tea or coffee, accompanied by an assortment of sweet and savoury Indonesian bites.

8lements Spa – The Real Reset Button

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Spa at 8lements Spa

No wellness escape is complete without some spa time indulgence, and the resort’s holistic oasis, 8lement’s Spa, offers treatments inspired by eight key pillars of wellbeing, including Restorative Detox, Nourishing, Soothing and Relaxing.

Our experience began with a bright Butterfly Pea Flower welcome drink before we selected our treatments from the spa’s signature menu. After a day of travelling, we opted for the Soothing Touch massage and for the next 90-minutes, we entered a blissful state of relaxation.

Warm oils, expert hands, and a deeply calming atmosphere worked together to melt away every last ounce of tension. As the sun slowly set outside and the melodic Call to Prayer drifted from a distant mosque, the entire experience felt totally blissful.

A Feast of Indonesian Flavours

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Dinner Satay

Dinner at Refresh Restaurant came in the form of an Indonesian Rijsttafel (a selection of small dishes), and it was generous in every sense. The meal began with traditional Indonesian crackers accompanied by a range of sambals (chilis) from mild to moderate in spice level.

Next came an impressive starter platter featuring assorted meat satay served on a sizzling barbecue, comforting Soto Ayam, sweetcorn fritters and Trancam – a fresh vegetable salad seasoned with grated coconut.

At this point, we were already feeling pleasantly full – then the mains arrived. Thank goodness we had chosen loose-fitting clothes!

Five sensational dishes showcased the richness and diversity of Indonesian cuisine across the archipelago. Highlights included the deeply flavoursome Tongseng Kambing Muda, featuring braised lamb ribs in a coconut soy broth, and the incredibly tender Rendang Padang, beef that has been slow-cooked for five hours until it reaches melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

Everything was served alongside a trio of rice dishes, including our personal favourite – fragrant yellow coconut rice.

Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, dessert arrived – and it was too good to resist. A trio of sweet treats featuring black sticky rice pudding and homemade coconut ice-cream provided the perfect ending to an indulgently memorable evening.

A Spiritual Journey to Borobudur

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Borobudur Temple Tour

Another big advantage of staying at Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta is its proximity to some of Central Java’s most remarkable cultural attractions.

About an hour from the resort sits Borobudur Temple, one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hotel can easily organise transportation for guests, or you are welcome to make your own arrangements. Having wanted to visit this iconic spot for years, it was one of those rare travel moments that felt like ticking-off a bucket-list dream.

Standing before this extraordinary Buddhist monument was a humbling experience, and as we wandered through the ancient stone structure and admired the intricate carvings, we genuinely felt a profound sense of peace. It perfectly complemented the wellness focus of our stay.

For those wanting to explore further, the resort can also arrange cultural excursions to Keraton Yogyakarta (the Sultan’s Palace) or Kota Gede, the former 16th-Century capital renowned for its rich Javanese heritage.

Immersive Wellness with a Local Touch

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Meditation

What impressed us most about Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta was how deeply wellness and self-care are embedded into every aspect of the guest experience.

Guests can participate in a range of extensive activities, including silver-making workshops, traditional Keris craftsmanship, sound healing, yoga meditation, energy crystal healing, swing yoga, eco pounding, jamu making and healthy cooking classes.

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Sound Healing

One evening, we joined the Ethic Music & Yoga Meditation session. Led by a skilled yoga practitioner and accompanied by a musician playing an array of traditional instruments, the experience felt grounding and deeply immersive.

Through gentle movement and mindful breathing, we worked on releasing tension held within the body, before finishing with a calming meditation and card reading, designed to align the body, mind and spirit.

Thai Degustation Dining Delights

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Orchid Thai Degustation Menu

On our second evening, we traded Indonesian flavours for the resort’s signature Orchid Thai Degustation menu. Course after course arrived at the table, dazzling our taste buds with Thai cuisine at its finest.

From the classic Tom Yum Goong soup to steamed sea bass in chilli lime sauce, aromatic chicken green curry and perfectly executed Pad Thai, every dish delivered bold flavours that danced across our palates. It was another reminder that dining at Garrya Bianti is an experience in itself.

Getting Creative with Batik & Eco Pounding

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Batik Workshop

With Yogyakarta widely regarded as Indonesia’s batik capital, we couldn’t leave without trying a batik workshop. Hosted in collaboration with a local female-led craft company, House of Pupos Wikaning, the private class gave us a fascinating insight into one of Indonesia’s most treasured cultural traditions.

After drawing our batik design, we were shown how to use a canting – a pen-like tool used to carefully apply hot wax to the fabric. The whole process required patience, focus and a remarkably steady hand. Luckily, Ibu Septa was nearby to help fix any shaky lines and accidental splodges!

Once completed, our fabric was taken away to be dyed, the wax removed, and later returned to us, revealing the finished masterpiece.

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Eco Pounding Batik Workshop

Next came Eco Pounding, a wonderfully mindful activity inspired by nature. We were given a selection of leaves and flowers from the surrounding environment, and the choice between making a fan or a canvas tote bag.

We gently pounded the flowers and leaves onto the fabric, allowing their natural pigments to transfer and create beautiful patterns. Not only was it a fun introduction to the local flora and fauna, but it was also surprisingly therapeutic and lots of fun. Best of all, we left with unique handmade souvenirs to remember our stay.

Finding Our Balance

Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta Cage-Free Eggs

By the time checkout arrived, we didn’t feel ready to leave our serene bubble of tranquillity. As a final keepsake, we were gifted a small box of the resort’s cage-free eggs – a thoughtful symbol of Garrya Bianti’s commitment to sustainability, community and conscious living.

Driving away, we felt refreshed, restored and completely recharged. The philosophy at Garrya Bianti centres around helping guests find balance, and after two days immersed in wellness, culture and genuine Indonesian hospitality, we’d definitely found ours!
