When most people picture a holiday in Yogyakarta, they think of ancient temples, bustling markets, colourful streets and rich Javanese culture. But finding a hotel that puts you right in the middle of all that action, whilst still feeling like a peaceful retreat at the end of the day, can be a challenge.
And that’s exactly what makes Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta so special.

Located in the heart of the city, right beside Plaza Ambarrukmo (Jogja’s second-largest shopping mall), this iconic 5-star hotel offers the perfect base for exploring everything Yogyakarta has to offer. Yet despite its central location, stepping inside feels like entering another world. One where royal heritage, timeless elegance and modern luxury come together in perfect unison.
And unlike anywhere else in Indonesia, that royal connection is very real. Yogyakarta remains a unique monarchy within the Republic of Indonesia and is still governed by its reigning Sultan. Royal Ambarrukmo’s story is deeply intertwined with that history, standing on the grounds of the former Kedhaton Ambarrukmo, a royal residence once occupied by the Sultan himself.
For a convenient city location steeped in authentic regal heritage, Royal Ambarrukmo is hard to beat.

A Stay Fit For a Sultan

From the moment we arrived, there was a sense of grandeur that sets this Jogja hotel apart from all the others we’ve stayed in. Dressed in striking red and gold uniforms reminiscent of palace attendants, the doormen welcomed us into an impressive lobby that immediately hinted at the property’s regal past.
The space itself is vast and elegant, featuring a monumental stone relief dating back to the 1960s alongside an impressive collection of artworks and cultural pieces. Everywhere you look, there are subtle reminders that this isn’t just another luxury hotel – it’s a living piece of Yogyakarta’s history.

The story of Royal Ambarrukmo stretches back more than a century to the former royal estate known as Kedhaton Ambarrukmo. Once serving as a royal retreat and later the residence of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII, the grounds remain one of Yogyakarta’s most historically significant cultural sites. Walking through the property, you can genuinely feel that connection between past and present oozing throughout the building.
Our Newly Refurbished Junior Suite

Royal Ambarrukmo offers a wide range of accommodation options, including Deluxe Rooms, Premier Rooms, Studio Rooms, Royal Premiere Rooms, Junior Suites, Executive Suites and the spectacular Ambarrukmo Suite.
For our stay, we checked into one of the newly refurbished Junior Suites, and the first thing we noticed was just how spacious it felt. Designed with contemporary elegance and thoughtful touches throughout, the suite offers plenty of room to spread out and relax after a busy day exploring the city. There was a comfortable sofa area, king-sized bed, large LED television, complimentary minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities and a generous selection of amenities.

Floor-to-ceiling windows allowed plenty of natural light into the room, whilst our private balcony provided the perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee before heading out for the day. It felt luxurious without being over-the-top – exactly the kind of room you look forward to returning to after wandering through Jogja’s bustling streets.
Not only that, but an added bonus of staying in the Junior Suite was that we also had exclusive access to the Royal Club Lounge, adding an extra layer of indulgence to our break.
Sunset Drinks With a View at the Royal Club Lounge

Located on the top floor of the hotel, the Royal Club Lounge quickly became one of our favourite areas of the hotel to kick-back and relax.
The panoramic views across the city towards Mount Merapi are spectacular, particularly as the sun begins to set. Whether you choose one of the indoor lounges, outdoor seating areas or sink into one of the comfy sofas, it’s a wonderful place to relax above the city.
The lounge also features stylish meeting rooms, making it ideal for business travellers who need a professional space while visiting Yogyakarta.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments, while breakfast is also served here each morning for a more exclusive dining experience.
But the real highlight comes between 6pm and 8pm during Evening High Tea. For two blissful hours, guests can enjoy free-flow cocktails, wines and beers accompanied by a delicious buffet of light bites, savoury snacks and sweet treats.
After busy days exploring temples, markets and museums, we found ourselves looking forward to returning each evening to unwind with a cocktail whilst watching the lights of Jogja begin to sparkle below.
Discovering Jogja After Dark

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Royal Ambarrukmo is just how easy it is to explore the city. If you’re in the mood for shopping, Plaza Ambarrukmo is literally next door. The mall offers everything from international brands and local fashion to restaurants, cafés and entertainment.
But if you really want to experience Jogja’s energy, make sure you head into the city centre and spend an evening exploring Jalan Malioboro. This famous street is one of Yogyakarta’s most iconic destinations and absolutely comes alive after sunset. Food vendors line the sidewalks, market stalls spill onto the streets, and souvenir shops stay busy well into the evening.
Add in live musicians, street performers and the constant buzz of people enjoying the atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why Malioboro remains such a favourite with visitors. We’d recommend jumping aboard a traditional becak (three-wheeled rickshaw) as an authentic way to see some of the city also.
And after all those evening exploits, being able to return to the comfort of Royal Ambarrukmo afterwards was the perfect way to end the night.
A Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

Breakfast is included with your stay, and let’s just say arriving hungry is highly recommended. The buffet spread is enormous! Alongside all the familiar breakfast favourites, including pancakes, waffles, eggs cooked to order, cereals, pastries and fresh fruit, there is also a fantastic selection of Indonesian and Javanese dishes.
One of our favourite discoveries was Gudeg, Yogyakarta’s famous jackfruit curry and one of the region’s signature dishes. Sampling local specialities like this was one of the highlights of breakfast and offered a wonderful introduction to traditional Javanese flavours.
The buffet also showcases dishes from across Indonesia, giving guests an opportunity to experience the country’s diverse culinary heritage without ever leaving the hotel.
Families will appreciate the dedicated kids’ breakfast area, complete with special treats designed for younger guests. And even better, the restaurant sits right beside the children’s pool area, which features slides and plenty of splash-tastic fun for little ones.
Something for Every Type of Traveller

What we love most about Royal Ambarrukmo is that you can make your stay as busy or as chilled as you like.
If your idea of a holiday involves lounging by the pool, you’ll find a generous swimming pool surrounded by lush tropical gardens. If you’d rather stay active, there’s a fully equipped fitness centre ready for your morning workout. Families are well catered for too, thanks to the kids’ club and dedicated children’s pool.

For those looking to slow down, the Nurkadhatyan Spa offers a range of treatments inspired by traditional wellness practices.
The hotel also embraces its cultural roots through a variety of activities including archery, yoga and traditional dance experiences, allowing guests to immerse themselves in Yogyakarta’s rich and unique heritage.
The Perfect Base For Exploring Yogyakarta

Whether you’re visiting Yogyakarta for business, culture, food or a little bit of everything, Royal Ambarrukmo strikes a rare balance. It places you right in the heart of the city whilst still delivering the peaceful atmosphere and luxury you’d expect from a 5-star stay.
Many of Jogja’s most famous attractions are within easy reach, including Prambanan Temple, Taman Sari Water Palace, Kraton Yogyakarta, museums, galleries and traditional markets.
But what truly sets Royal Ambarrukmo apart isn’t just the location. It’s the feeling that you’re staying somewhere genuinely connected to Yogyakarta’s story. A place where the legacy of the Sultan still lives on, where history surrounds you at every turn and where modern luxury exists alongside centuries of royal tradition.
For travellers wanting to experience the very best of Jogja while staying somewhere truly unique, Royal Ambarrukmo is a destination in its own right.
