Borobudur: A living soul beneath the Java sky

As the name implies, the festival takes place at the Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java. This majestic temple is surrounded by two sets of twin mountains: Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing to the northwest, and Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi to the southeast.
Often named as one of the best temples in Yogyakarta, Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, built in the 9th Century. It features a distinguished architectural style blending Buddhist and Hindu influences, with thousands of ornate panels gracing its solid walls, depicting Buddha’s story through scenes of nature and daily life.

Representing a cosmic model, Borobudur rises as a nine-level pyramid with six square terraces amid lush plantations. Its largest and tallest bell-shaped stone dome – or stupa – sits at the centre, crowning the temple. This particular structure symbolises the ultimate state of peace where a Buddha is no longer reborn into the eternal cycle of life (Samsara).
Though ancient, the sacred Borobudur Temple remains a place of worship and pilgrimage for many people today, most notably for celebrations like the Borobudur Vesak Lantern Festival.

The spiritual heart of the lantern festival

The lantern festival is tied to the Vesak celebration at Borobudur, a special moment when local Buddhists and pilgrims from around the world gather at this historic site. Falling on the 31st May this year, this sacred day deeply honours the pivotal milestones in the Buddha’s journey – his birth, enlightenment, and passing – under the glow of the full moon.
Centred around three main Buddhist temples, the Vesak celebrations begin with a ritual walk from Mendut Temple to Pawon Temple, and finish at Borobudur Temple. As they walk, the monks and devotees bring along the sacred Tripitaka scriptures, holy water, an eternal flame, and other spiritual items. From the first step, the whole procession reflects one’s spiritual journey to enlightenment.
What’s particularly lovely about Vesak Day at Borobudur is how the celebration doesn’t feel closed off. In fact, it’s very common for non-Buddhists to follow the walk quietly behind or watch from the sidelines. You are welcome to join in – just keep a respectful distance to allow the worshippers to carry out their rituals.

The sacred procession is followed by a collective moment of silent meditation and prayer on the grounds of Borobudur, guided by monks at the exact moment of the full moon. This is the actual peak of the Vesak celebration at the temple, before the night ends with the magical energy of the famed lantern festival. For 2026, the festival theme is Lentera Perdamaian Waisak, which translates to Vesak Lanterns of Peace.
So, why lanterns? They symbolise enlightenment, hope and togetherness on the path toward a more peaceful life. Before letting their lanterns take flight, everyone can write their personal wishes and prayers on them, expressing hopes for peace and freedom from suffering in this world. Then, you’ll join the countdown to release thousands of lanterns that drift off into the sky together.
The Borobudur lantern festival is a breathtaking sight to behold, combining moving visuals alongside deep spirituality. No wonder this experience is cherished as a form of universal beauty well worth travelling to witness.
How to join the Borobudur Vesak Lantern Festival

The temple is closed for sightseeing during the Vesak celebration. If you’d like to join the lantern release, you’ll need to secure a ticket in advance – this is done as a donation through the official MBMI (Walubi) website or Tiket.com.
When booking, you’ll need to fill in your personal details on the website. Usually, there are two lantern release sessions available to choose from: the first from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and the second from 9:30pm to 11pm.
For 2026, the donation ranges from IDR 550,000 to IDR 2,000,000 per person. Your ticket includes access to the Borobudur Temple grounds and the lantern area, a wishing card, and a lantern (shared amongst four people). You can secure a maximum of 10 tickets per booking.

Keep in mind that one ticket doesn’t equal one lantern. For the release, you’ll be arranged into teams of four to handle one large lantern. Whilst it’s best to attend with three other people, don’t worry if you’re travelling solo, as the organisers will group you with other participants.
As a sign of respect, guests are asked to dress modestly in all-white attire for this meaningful event. Plus, if you’re planning to bring children, the minimum age to participate in the lantern festival is seven years old.
After purchase, e-vouchers must be exchanged for wristbands on-site, typically on the day of the lantern festival. Your tickets are non-refundable, so make sure your plans are confirmed before you hit the ‘donate’ button.
