We’ve also not forgotten to include some awesome outdoor activities, for those seeking a more thrilling escape!

Where is Bandung

Bandung, also known as ‘Paris van Java’ and ‘Kota Kembang’ (City of Flowers), is the capital city of the West Java province. Geographically, this third-largest city in Indonesia is located within the Greater Bandung area on the island of Java, approximately 140 kilometres (87 miles) southeast of Jakarta.

Nestled amongst a serene river basin and surrounded by volcanic mountains acting as a natural defence, Bandung is divided into eight sub-city regions: Arcamanik, Cibeunying, Kerees, Kordon, Gedebage, Ujungberung, Bojonagara and Tegalega. This is then further segmented into an additional 30 districts (kecamatan) and 153 villages (kelurahan).

Why Visit Bandung

Bandung is a city that boasts a captivating history, and here’s an intriguing fact – its strategic location once prompted the Dutch East Indies government to consider shifting their capital to Bandung instead of Batavia, which we now know as Jakarta.

This city joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2015 and is today renowned as Indonesia’s cultural hub, interweaving traces of Sundanese culture and Dutch colonial architecture into one big melting pot. Speaking of architecture, you’ll find some notable colonial buildings such as the Gedung Sate and other hidden gems located throughout the city, featuring innovative Dutch designs dating from the 1930s. And if you’re into fascinating exhibits, there’s also a geological museum to explore!

In addition to its rich history, Bandung has earned a reputation as a Smart City, due to the way it utilises modern technology throughout its government services. For example, its use of social media to alert local people about potential floods or traffic jams.

In the city centre, you’ll find the famous Jalan Cihampelas, known locally as ‘Jeans Street,’ a bustling shopping destination offering numerous clothing stores and jeans at great prices. In fact, the city’s entire economy thrives on local designer products, placing creative culture at the heart of the city. Not only that, Bandung is also a great place to let your inner foodie out, boasting a vibrant local food scene, with an abundance of enticing food stalls to try!

Bandung is a highly sought-after getaway destination for Jakarta residents, drawn by its cool climate, diverse culinary offerings, close proximity and scores of tourist attractions. Adding to its allure is the city’s diverse geography, featuring hills to the north, the distinctive Tangkuban Perahu volcano (which resembles an upturned boat), and fertile soil to the south and east.

And for adventure travellers, Bandung is the perfect tourist spot, surrounded by lush tea plantations that create a natural paradise for those keen to explore off the beaten path.

How to get to Bandung

Now, let’s explore the transportation options available throughout your Bandung trip:

By Air

Travellers departing from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore have the option to purchase tickets with a single stopover in Jakarta. However, if you’re arriving from other parts of the world, the best way and most convenient route would be to fly to Jakarta first. From Jakarta, catch direct flights to Husein Sastranegara International Airport (BDO) in Bandung, where the journey will take between 30 minutes to an hour. Departures are available from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP) or Soekarno Hatta International Airport.

For those travelling from different cities within the island of Java, Wings Airlines provides direct flights from Adisucipto International Airport (JOG) in Yogyakarta to Husein Sastranegara International Airport (BDO) in Bandung. Domestic travellers can also find direct routes from various cities across Indonesia, including Bali, Banjarmasin, Batam, Palembang and Makassar.

By Land

When making the journey from Jakarta to Bandung, you’ll find a range of transportation options to choose from. You can either opt for a 2-hour drive or a 4-hour train ride, with plenty of sights to soak up along the way.

Train rides are available from various regions throughout Java, with popular choices like Argo Parahayangan and Serayu departing from Jakarta (priced at IDR 150,000 and IDR 63,000, respectively). For those coming from Surabaya, Harina or Argo Wilis other options are also available with fares ranging from IDR 330,000 to IDR 660,000. Travellers from Yogyakarta can choose Lodaya or Mutiara Selatan, with ticket prices ranging from IDR 245,000 to IDR 420,000 per journey.

Additionally, the recently introduced ‘Whoosh’ train service connects the two cities, covering the distance in approximately 45 minutes. However, it’s worth noting that Whoosh doesn’t stop at Bandung’s downtown train station. To reach the city centre, expect an extra 2-3 hours of travel time, possibly involving various modes of transportation throughout your journey.

Meanwhile, minibuses offer a speedy and budget-friendly route from Jakarta to Bandung, taking around 2 hours and 30 minutes. For convenient bus and travel service options, we’d recommend Cititrans and DayTrans.

Best travel times

When planning your Bandung adventure, timing is key. So, here are the best times to visit the Flower City.

June to September (Dry Season)

This is the perfect time to delve into exploring this vibrant city! The long sunny days are ideal for taking part in outdoor activities, and you’ll experience a cooler average temperature compared to other Java regions. This season unfolds like a photographer’s dream, providing countless opportunities to capture stunning landscapes, including majestic mountains, coffee plantations and picturesque parks.

October to May (Rainy Season)

Considerably less favourable due to the heavy rains, this period may not be the best time to visit. Many of the city’s attractions, like Kawah Putih, Tangkuban Perahu and Dusun Bambu, are outdoor delights, so frequent downpours can certainly put a dampener on your plans. There’s also a risk of flooding and blocked roads during the heavy rains.

For those seeking to infuse some local festivities into their Bandung trip, mid-year is the preferred travel time, coinciding with the Asia Africa Festival Parade. This event offers a chance to partake in local cultural celebrations and traditions, adding a special touch to your visit.

However, if you prefer smaller crowds and still-pleasant weather, then November is a good time to visit Bandung, as it offers the best of both worlds.
