If you’re keen to discover an untouched slice of Indonesia beyond Bali or Raja Ampat, then Karimunjawa is calling. Nestled off the north coast of Central Java, this idyllic island chain offers the kind of pristine, slow-paced castaway life that’s becoming harder to find.

Mega Resort Karimunjawa Canoe

Karimunjawa is a cluster of small islands covering around 1,500 hectares of land and an incredible 110,000 hectares of marine territory. Think clear, glassy waters, powdery white beaches, and wooden boats drifting between quiet islands. It’s the kind of tropical vibe that melts stress away!

Declared a National Marine Park back in 1999, Karimunjawa isn’t just a paradise – it’s a conservation gem. The park protects rare species like the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Green Sea Turtles, and Hawksbill Sea Turtles. Visit the semi-natural hatcheries on the shoreline and you’ll see how this place is not only stunning, but also deeply committed to preserving marine life.

Sunrise views from your balcony? Tick. Falling asleep to the sound of waves? Double tick. Plus, they’ve got private transfers from the airport or port sorted too.

Best Time to Visit

The weather can be a bit moody in these parts, so your best bet is to plan your visit between the months of June and August when the dry season is in full swing. September to October is also okay, as the rainy season hasn’t fully got underway by then.

How to Get There

The most accessible entry point to Karimunjawa is Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport (SRG) in Semarang. The airport is well connected with direct flights from Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) in Jakarta and Gusti Ngurah Rai (DPS) in Bali.

From Semarang Airport, it’s about a 2-hour drive to Kartini Port in Jepara, the main departure point for Karimunjawa. From there, you’ve got two main ferry options:

  • KMP Feri Siginjai takes around 4.5 to 5 hours, with tickets ranging from IDR130,000 to IDR200,000 per person. It departs Jepara on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings (generally 6:30am to 7:00am), and returns from Karimunjawa on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday afternoon, and Sunday morning (usually from 7:00am to 9:00am).
  • KMC Express Bahari is the faster boat option, taking 2 to 2.5 hours, and costs about IDR200,000 to IDR300,000 per person. Departures are almost daily from Jepara at 9:00am, with an extra trip at 11:00am on Saturdays. From Karimunjawa, the service runs daily with varying morning and midday schedules.

Travel Tips:

  • Always check the weather and sailing schedules in advance, as crossings are highly dependent on the weather and sea conditions.
