How to Get There

If you’re ready to explore Garut, you’ll be pleased to know that getting there is easy thanks to its three airport options: Kertajati International Airport (KJT) in West Java, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP) in Jakarta. For convenience, flying into Jakarta is the easiest choice, with frequent flight connections to both Bali and Australia.
From Jakarta, Garut is approximately a 4-5 hour drive. Alternatively, you can fly into Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP) and take a Whoosh high-speed train to Bandung, before continuing to Garut by car. For the ultimate hassle-free trip, we would recommend hiring a private car, as some of Garut’s top attractions are a little off-the-beaten-path and not easily accessible by public transport.
Best Time to Visit

If you want to experience Garut at its best, plan your trip during the dry season which runs from May to September. This is when you’ll get the best weather for exploring, with clear skies and easy access to all the must-visit spots without any unexpected rain showers getting in the way. Expect daytime temperatures of around 20°C to 30°C, however if you’re venturing into the highlands remember to pack a jacket, as temperatures can drop between 10°C and 18°C at night.

- This stratovolcano has an altitude of 2,665 metres above sea-level, with the hike being favoured by many trekkers due to its moderate difficulty level and well-maintained facilities The journey to the peak takes approximately 2-hours, with toilets and rest stops available along the way to the summit.

This eerie yet stunning landscape of charred jet-black trees is a dramatic reminder of the volcano’s explosive past. Formed by the 1772 volcanic eruption, the forest has an otherworldly vibe, making it one of Garut’s most iconic spots. From here, you’ll also get a front-row seat to the steaming crater of Mount Papandayan – talk about a dramatic view!

Morning
- It’s time for a classic breakfast at Surabi Papandayan. This popular morning breakfast spot has been serving its signature dish, Surabi pancakes since the 1960s. The toppings here are simple yet delicious, ranging from egg, oncom (fermented soybean), and shredded beef, to sweet options like cheese and chocolate.

Specialising in lamb and cowhide leather, the leather craft industry in Sukaregang has been around since the 1930s and is frequently showcased in global fashion festivals, including the Lineapelle International Leather Fair. Here, you’ll find a wide range of handmade leather goods such as jackets, shoes, bags and wallets. You can even have a customised horse saddle made if you should fancy!

- The motifs of Garut batik reflect the social and cultural life, philosophy and traditions of the Sundanese people. These patterns typically feature geometric shapes alongside floral and fauna motifs. The colours are predominantly cream, combined with bright hues that are characteristic of Garut batik.

Afternoon
- Have lunch at Sari Cobek Cangkuang, famous for its warm Nasi Liwet served in an authentic steel pot.
