How to Get There

Banyuwangi is home to the unique Banyuwangi International Airport (BWX), referred to as a “green airport” due to its construction using eco-friendly materials like grass and wood. In fact, it even earned the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2022! However, flights are currently limited, with connections mainly from Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport, CGK).

If you’re travelling from Bali, getting there by land is a total breeze! Simply drive 4-hours from Denpasar to Gilimanuk Harbour, then take a 1-hour ferry ride to Ketapang Harbour in Banyuwangi for a hassle-free journey which allows you to take-in plenty of sights along the way.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (April to October) is the ideal time for your Banyuwangi escapade. Clear skies make it perfect for outdoor adventures, including exploring Ijen Crater, Alas Purwo National Park or the pristine beaches of Pulau Merah.

In Banyuwangi, a volcanic crater cradles a turquoise lake, enveloped by rocky terrain. Yellow sulfur deposits and plumes of smoke punctuate the landscape, as visitors tread along the winding path.

If you’re a culture enthusiast, October is your best month to go. Don’t miss the Gandrung Sewu Festival, where over 1,000 dancers perform the iconic Gandrung dance by the seaside. For surfers, May to October brings the steady swells and offshore winds that have helped make G-Land one of the world’s premier surfing destinations.

Day 1: Savour Local Flavours and Stunning Sunsets

Morning

  • Kick-off your adventure with a culinary treat at Pecel Ayu, where you can try their famous nasi pecel and rawon (a rich, aromatic black beef soup named one of the ‘10 Best Rated Soups in the World’ by Taste Atlas in 2023).
  • Next, head to De Djawatan Forest, a mystical grove of towering trembesi trees reminiscent of Fangorn Forest from The Lord of the Rings. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride or snap some Insta-worthy pics among the greenery.

Afternoon

  • Spice things up at Warung Ayam Pedas Mbah Jo, known for its fiery chicken dishes since 1994. Non-spicy options are available for those with gentler palates.
  • Spend your afternoon unwinding at Pulau Merah Beach. Whether you’re surfing its gentle waves or strolling along the sandy shore, this spot is pure bliss.

Evening

  • Stick around for a spectacular sunset at Pulau Merah, where a rocky hill adds a dramatic backdrop to the afternoon’s golden hues.
  • Head back to your accommodation and get some rest – you’ll need your energy for tomorrow’s hike up Mt Ijen!

Day 2: Explore the UNESCO Global Geopark

Morning

  • Get ready for an unforgettable Mount Ijen trek! Depart at midnight (12:00am) and head to the Paltuding basecamp as you prepare for the Ijen Crater Hike. Upon arrival, take a short rest whilst waiting for the pack gates to open at 2:00 am. Entry fees for international visitors are IDR 100,000 (AUD $10) on weekdays and IDR 150,000 (AUD $15) on weekends. Make sure to rent a gas mask at the entrance as the sulphur fumes can be quite intense.
  • Trekking to the Summit: The trek from the starting point to the summit takes approximately 2-hours. It’s important to start early -if the sun rises before you reach the crater, you’ll miss the mesmerising Blue Fire at the crater’s base.
  • Experience the Blue Fire and Sunrise: After witnessing the enchanting Blue Fire, ascend back to the summit to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise and panoramic views of the volcanic Ijen Crater. During the hike, give way to the sulphur miners carrying back-breaking loads of up to 100kg on their shoulders. If you wish to photograph them, be respectful and ask for permission first.
  • Descent from Mount Ijen: After soaking-in the incredible views, begin your descent back to Paltuding. If you’re feeling exhausted, you can hire a cart taxi for approximately IDR 500,000 (AUD $50) to take you back down.
  • Breakfast and Rest: Recharge with a tasty breakfast at a traditional restaurant in Paltuding, whilst taking a well-deserved break before your next adventures.

Afternoon

  • Continue your journey from Paltuding to Kalipait Waterfall. This waterfall is actually part of the river that flows from the Ijen Crater, however due to the high acidity of the water, it is not suitable for swimming in.
  • The next destination is Kawah Wurung, which is about a 30-minute drive from Kalipait Waterfall. Kawah Wurung boasts stunning hilly landscapes, and from its viewing tower you can take-in the breathtaking scenery of rolling mountains, or venture down to its expansive savanna.
  • After exploring Kawah Wurung, it’s time to dive into Banyuwangi’s rich culture by visiting Gandrung Terakota Park. Here, you’ll find hundreds of terracotta statues depicting traditional Gandrung dancers, scattered from the restaurant area to the surrounding rice fields.
  • Enjoy a delightful lunch with a view at Gandrung Terakota Park, where you can choose from a variety of special menu options whilst relaxing in the lush greenery of the rice fields around you.
A group of terracotta statues of musicians and dancers, reminiscent of Banyuwangi's cultural richness, is arranged in concentric circles, set in a lush garden with trees in the background.

Evening

  • Unwind at Blimbingsari Beach and end the day with a seafood feast at Warles Sari Asih, where fresh fish is paired with Sambal Tempong, a local chilli paste.

Day 3: Discover Alas Purwo National Park

Morning

  • After breakfast, head to Alas Purwo National Park, a journey that takes around 3-hours.
  • Begin your visit at Sadengan Savannah, the perfect spot to observe Banyuwangi’s unique wildlife up close, including lutung monkeys, stunning peacocks and the rare Javanese Bull.
  • Continue to Pancur Beach, a pristine stretch of soft white sand with a long shoreline. The beach features volcanic rocks along its edges, making it a significant geo-site within the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark.
A vibrant group of people joyfully ride atop a white vehicle along a narrow road in Banyuwangi, flanked by tall trees and dense vegetation.

Afternoon

  • Enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant near Pancur Beach before continuing your adventure.
  • From Pancur Beach, the only way to reach Plengkung Beach (more famously known as G-Land) is by a 4×4 Jeep. Don’t worry, as there are plenty of Jeep rental services available to take you to the best surfing spots.
  • Now it’s time to hit the waves at one of the world’s best surfing spots! The beach’s legendary waves can form three layers, ranging from 3 to 8 metres high during peak conditions – a reason why Plengkung Beach is a top pick for hosting many international surfing competitions.

Evening

  • Unwind and watch the sunset on the coral-strewn and pepper-grain-like sandy shores of Plengkung Beach. If you’re lucky, you might even spot peacocks wandering along the beach.

Day 4: Relaxing in Banyuwangi

Morning

  • Start your day with the traditional Banyuwangi dish, Sego Cawuk. This dish consists of rice served with clover leaves, accompanied by your choice of chicken or egg.
  • After breakfast, head to Boom Beach. On special occasions, this black-sandy beach hosts the iconic Gandrung Sewu (Dance of a Thousand Gandrung), an annual cultural event held in October. The beach also features remnants of old Dutch colonial buildings which are fascinating to explore and photograph.
Five women in traditional Balinese dance costumes pose gracefully on a Banyuwangi beach, with the serene sea and majestic mountains forming the perfect backdrop.

Afternoon

  • Stop by Osing Deles, one of Banyuwangi’s top souvenir centres. Here, you’ll find everything from local delicacies to traditional batik clothing featuring the signature Gajah Oling motif.
  • Wrap-up your Banyuwangi escapades and get ready for your journey home, or perhaps onwards to your next Indonesian adventure.
