Java

Located along the equator, Java is Indonesia’s most densely populated island, with an estimated population of a staggering 145 million people! This volcano-dotted island is also the 13th largest in the world and is made up of four provinces; Banten, West Java, Central Java and East Java – although Jakarta and Yogyakarta are also given special provincial status. As well as being home to almost 60% of the entire Indonesian population, Java is also the country’s economic and political capital – with capital city Jakarta being the most densely populated city in Southeast Asia!

Originally, Java was the centre of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom, although nowadays Islam is the predominant religion throughout the island. Home to many world famous temples, such as the mightily impressive Borobudur and Prambanan Temple, eagle-eyed adventure-seekers can still spot traditional Hindu landmarks of an earlier era throughout the island. From the Instagram-worthy Tumpak Sewu waterfall, sandy white beaches and the soaring volcano climbs of Mount Bromo and Ijen – there is plenty to satisfy your curiosity as you explore this bustling and captivating island.
