Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Padang in West Sumatra is between May and September. During this period, the weather tends to be drier with less rainfall, making it ideal for enjoying outdoor activities such as exploring beaches, hills and cultural attractions.

The average temperature ranges from 24°C to 31°C throughout the year. In the dry season (May to September), temperatures are typically more stable with only minimal differences between day and night. Humidity remains relatively high due to the tropical climate, so the air can feel warm and muggy.

For those visitors seeking a more traditional experience, visiting during Ramadan or the Lebaran holiday offers the unique opportunity to witness authentic Minangkabau customs and fully immerse yourself in the culture.

How To Get There

West Sumatra is served by an international airport, Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). The airport accommodates flights from major Indonesian cities, including Jakarta via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK).

If you’re travelling from Bali, note that there are no direct flights to Padang, so you will need to transit in Jakarta first.

Day 1- Welcome To Legendary Padang

Morning

After your arrival at Minangkabau International Airport, your adventure will begin with a visit to your first destination, Pantai Air Manis. Here, you can enjoy the gentle breeze and the sound of the waves on the soft sandy beach. You will also have the opportunity to see the famous Batu Malin Kundang, a legendary rock formation tied into local folklore.

Afternoon

Lunch is your chance to savour the region’s famous Rendang at Lamun Ombak, well-known for serving deliciously authentic Padang cuisine. After your meal, continue your journey to Siti Nurbaya Bridge where charming panoramic views of the city are romantically intertwined with a classic love story from local legend. Whilst you’re there, don’t miss checking-out the historical charm of Padang Old Town, steeped in rich cultural heritage.

Once you arrive in Bukittinggi, enjoy a local lunch of Nasi Kapau before visiting the town’s iconic landmark, Jam Gadang, a grand clock tower which stands proudly above the town square.

With its blend of intriguing history and stunning natural landscapes, Bukittinggi is a real must-see. Morning

From Bukittinggi, the adventure continues to the coastal town of Pariaman, where Pantai Gandoriah is the star attraction. This beach is known for its soft white sand and calm waves, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun. If you fancy something more active, it’s also a great spot to try surfing, as the waves are gentle enough for beginners.

Afternoon

Be sure to sample the famous Gulai Kepala Ikan, a local fish-head curry that is a real must-try in Pariaman. You’ll find that many restaurants around Pantai Gandoriah will serve this delicious dish. After lunch, take a boat trip to Pulau Angso Duo, a small island offering crystal-clear waters and excellent snorkelling opportunities with plenty of dazzling marine life to spot.

Evening

In the late afternoon, after returning from Pulau Angso Duo, relax by the beach and enjoy the fresh coastal air whilst browsing for local souvenirs. As evening approaches, return to Bukittinggi for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Day 4 – Wrap-up with Birthplace of Bung Hatta

Your final day starts with the journey back to Padang. However, before heading home, make a stop-off at the birthplace of Bung Hatta, the childhood home of Indonesia’s first Vice President, where you can learn about his interesting life and legacy.

As you head back to Padang, don’t forget to visit the famous local souvenir shop Christine Hakim Idea Park to pick-up a packet or two of some Kripik Balado (spicy cassava chips) as well as some other holiday mementos.
