Best Time To Visit
The ideal time to visit the Jambi area of Kerinci Seblat National Park is during the dry season, which usually runs from April to October. The weather during this period tends to be clearer and drier, making outdoor activities like hiking Mount Kerinci, trekking and forest exploration more comfortable. During the dry season, the hiking trails are safer, as the ground is more stable and less slippery.

Temperatures in Kerinci Seblat National Park, particularly around the mighty Mount Kerinci, vary depending on altitude. At the foot of the mountain or in forested areas, temperatures usually range between 20°C and 25°C during the day. However, the higher you climb, the more the temperature drops. At the summit of Mount Kerinci, temperatures can dip to 5°C to 10°C, or even colder at night.
These drastic temperature changes often occur near the summit, so it’s crucial to prepare for cold weather, especially strong winds which can further lower the temperature. If you are keen to conquer this impressive volcano, be sure to pack a windbreaker jacket and adequate warm clothing – you’ll need it!
How To Get There
There are two main access points to Kerinci Seblat National Park. The first route is via Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin Airport (DJB) in Jambi, which serves various domestic flights from Jakarta’s bustling Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK).
From Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin Airport (DJB), the journey continues overland, taking approximately 10 to 12 hours. There are public transport options from Alam Barajo Terminal, where you can take a bus to Sungai Penuh. From Sungai Penuh, the journey is continued by local transport to Kersik Tuo Village. However, public transport from Jambi is limited, so the best option is to hire a private vehicle to take you to Kersik Tuo Village.

The second access point is via Minangkabau Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra. This route is a faster option, with the overland journey taking only 7 to 8 hours. In Padang, you’ll find many private travel cars that can take you to Kersik Tuo Village, the gateway to Mount Kerinci.
If you’re travelling from Bali, you’ll first need to transit at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta before continuing to Minangkabau Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra.
Day 1

After a long journey to Kersik Tuo Village, take a much-deserved rest at a local homestay. Kersik Tuo Village is the starting point for the hike up Mount Kerinci, offering views of vast tea plantations on the way and the towering Mount Kerinci in the background.
Rest for a while and enjoy the stunning sunset, as well as one of the village’s iconic landmarks, the Tiger Monument.
Day 2
The second day is dedicated to hiking the mighty Mount Kerinci. At 3,805 metres above sea level, it is the second-highest mountain in Indonesia. The trek up Mount Kerinci consists of seven posts, each offering camping areas to stop-off at along the way.

Ideally, you should aim to begin your hike at 8:00am or earlier, with plans to set up camp at Post 3. The journey to Post 3 takes about 10-11 hours depending on your pace and level of fitness. It’s recommended to hire a porter, which can be arranged at your homestay. Begin the hike from R10 Kersik Tuo Post (Kerinci North Resort). The cost of the hike is approximately IDR 25,000 for domestic tourists and IDR 460,000 for international tourists. This fee includes park entry, trekking and a 2-day, 1-night camping pass.
In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Post 3 and set up camp. As this marks the end of the vegetation line, prepare for some gusty winds! Make sure to secure your tent well and be ready with your windbreaker and waterproof jacket for the night ahead.
Day 3
The trek from Post 3 to the summit of Mount Kerinci takes around 5-6 hours. Begin your ascent at midnight to catch a jaw-dropping sunrise from the summit of Sumatra’s highest peak, with views of the surrounding hills and the beautiful landscape of Kerinci Seblat National Park giving an extra wow-factor to the start of your day!

After soaking-in the sunrise, begin your descent back to Post 3 for breakfast around 7:00am, then after eating, start your trek back down the mountain at around 10:00am.
By the afternoon, you’ll return to the homestay for a well-earned rest. Relax with a cup of locally produced tea and enjoy the cool, highland atmosphere as you reflect on your impressive climbing accomplishment.
Day 4
On Day 4, set out for Rawa Bento, where the river is famously referred to as “The Amazon of Kerinci”. From the homestay, head to Jernih Jaya Village, which will serve as your starting-point for exploring the beauty of the surrounding area of Rawa Bento, with the backdrop of Mount Kerinci and Mount Tujuh towering in the distance.

Rawa Bento is the highest swamp in Sumatra, located at 1,375 metres above sea level. Cruise along the river in a traditional boat and catch sight of the local wildlife, including cheeky primates, swamp buffaloes and a whole host of exotic birds.
After exploring Rawa Bento and having lunch, continue your journey to Lake Kaco, one of the most unique lakes in the Kerinci Seblat National Park. Its bright blue, crystal-clear waters are perfect for a refreshing swim to cool-down from the heat of the day.

However, be prepared to stretch those legs, because the trek to reach Lake Kaco takes about 1-2 hours. The path winds through lush forest and rugged terrain, but once you arrive you’ll receive one of nature’s best rewards – an invigorating swim in the lake’s clear waters. A great way to recharge after a long journey!
Day 5
Prepare for your return from Kersik Tuo Village by hiring a private car to take you to Padang, West Sumatra, before catching your return flight from Minangkabau Airport (PDG) in Padang.
