The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Raja Ampat is from September to April, which is often referred to as the “calm months.” During this period, the waves in Raja Ampat are generally flat, making it perfect to enjoy some island-hopping and diving adventures.
Raja Ampat enjoys a tropical climate, with warm, humid weather all year round. Daytime temperatures average around 31°C (88°F), dropping slightly to about 25°C (77°F) at night.
How to Get There
To reach Raja Ampat, you’ll need to travel by sea. Start your journey by flying to Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong. If you’re flying from Jakarta, there are direct flights to Sorong. If you’re coming from Bali, you’ll need to transit through Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado (MDC) or Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar (UPG).
From Sorong Airport, continue by taxi to Sorong’s Public Harbour (Pelabuhan Rakyat). If you prefer a more straightforward and quicker option, speedboats are also available at the harbour, but they are quite expensive, with a one-way trip costing between IDR 10,000,000 and IDR 15,000,000 per boat for 8-10 people.
Another option is to take a ferry. Ferries from Sorong’s Public Harbour to Waisai depart twice daily at 09:00 WIT and 14:00 WIT. The journey to Waisai by ferry takes about 2-3 hours, so make sure to coordinate your flight times with the ferry schedule.
Once in Waisai on Waigeo Island, you’ll continue your journey by speedboat.
Day 1

Whether you’re arriving from Sorong by speedboat or taking the ferry from Waisai, head to Arborek Island on Waigeo Island. This island is home to comfortable homestays right by the crystal-clear sea, making it the perfect base for your Raja Ampat adventure.
Arborek Island is well-equipped with facilities, including a dive centre and boat rental services, so you can easily explore other areas of Raja Ampat. Settle into your homestay and take a short break before heading out.
Afternoon/Evening

In the afternoon, enjoy snorkelling around the pier where vibrantly coloured coral reefs await your discovery! Finish the day by unwinding on the pier and winding-down with a breathtaking sunset over the beach.
Day 2
Morning
Start your day with a hearty breakfast before setting-off to explore the Wayag Islands, one of Raja Ampat’s most iconic spots. The pristine beaches and towering karst cliffs that rise from the sea were key in earning Raja Ampat its UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2023. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, as you’ll be trekking up karst hills.
At Wayag, you can visit two main viewpoints, Wayag Peak 1 and Wayag Peak 2, both offering mesmerising panoramic views of the islands below.
Afternoon

Afterwards, continue your adventure to Piaynemo, where trekking is the main activity. Here, you’ll hike to a peak that’s around 59 metres above sea level, climbing approximately 320 steps to reach the summit. However, the incredible views at the top make the climb totally worthwhile! After taking-in the sights of Piaynemo and capturing a few snaps as a momento, head back to Arborek Island to rest.
Day 3
Morning

No visit to Raja Ampat is truly complete without exploring its incredible underwater world. Begin your day by soaking-in a sunrise on Arborek Island, before gearing-up to dive into the inviting waters. You won’t need to go far, as just off the pier you’ll find an excellent spot for diving that’s brimming with thousands of fish and vibrant coral reefs – a stunning introduction to Raja Ampat’s rich marine wonders! The water current here is generally calm, making it suitable for beginner divers.
After your dive at Arborek Island, it’s time to pack-up and head to Friwen Wall, another popular diving site in Raja Ampat. Known for its underwater wall teeming with marine life and gentle currents, Friwen Wall is perfect for those new to diving.
Afternoon

After your dive, take a break at Raja Ampat’s Sandbank, also known as Mansuar Sandbank. This unique spot is a sandy haven that seems to magically appear in the middle of the ocean during low tide. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind before continuing your journey on to Waisai, where you’ll spend a night at a beachfront resort on Waigeo Island.
Day 4
Final day of the orangutan tour: Pondok Tanggui – Pangkalan Bun.
Morning

Waisai is the gateway to Raja Ampat and its capital city, known for its beautiful beachfront resorts, offering views of pristine white sands and sparkling azure waters. Begin your day by spotting the Red Bird of Paradise, an indigenous species of Papua.
For bird-watching fun, head to the Warkesi Forest Park Observation Centre, which is around a 30-minute drive from Waisai. The ideal time to observe the Red Bird of Paradise is during the early morning, between 06:30am and 09:00am, when the birds are most active, dancing on high branches to attract mates.
Under the guidance of local experts, trek through Warkesi Forest’s trails to discover the best viewing spots to spy these magnificent birds.
After immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Warkesi Forest, continue your adventure with a visit to the natural phenomenon of Kali Biru Waisai, a tranquil river with crystal-clear blue water located 30-minutes to an hour away, depending on road conditions.
At Kali Bir, enjoy the calm atmosphere and refreshing waters, or if you’d rather not swim, opt for a relaxing boat ride down the river taking-in all the natural sights along the way.
