The Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Jayapura is during the dry season, which typically lasts from May to October. During this period, the weather in Jayapura is generally drier and sunnier with little rainfall, making it ideal for various tourist activities such as getting out-and-about in nature, visiting beaches or soaking-up some impressive hilltop views.

How To Get There

Wooden huts on stilts stand by a pond filled with lily pads and pink water lilies, surrounded by dense green foliage under a partly cloudy sky—an idyllic spot for any Jayapura itinerary.

Jayapura is your gateway city to discovering the magic of Papua. You can fly into Sentani International Airport which handles all domestic flights from major cities around Indonesia and is located approximately 40km from the centre of Jayapura.

Since there are no direct flights from Bali, you’ll first need to transit in Makassar or Jakarta to reach your destination. Once you land in Jayapura, a rental car is your best bet for navigating and exploring everything that this exciting destination has to offer.

Day 1

A small bird with black and yellow feathers sits perched atop a tall wooden stump, surrounded by curling green vines and leaves, creating a scene reminiscent of a Jayapura itinerary. The sky forms a light background.

Afternoon

  • Begin with an epic bird-watching experience at Isyo Hill in Rhepang Muaif Village, renowned worldwide for its incredible Cendrawasih (Bird of Paradise) sightings. After you’ve settled into your guesthouse and caught your breath from your flight, gear-up for an afternoon full of adventure!
  • Head to the Yellow-tailed Bird of Paradise Observation Centre to witness firsthand these magnificent birds as they return to their nests. At Isyo Hill, you’ll be able to get up-close with four amazing varieties of this exotic species.

Day 2

Aerial view of a red arch bridge spanning a body of water, connecting two green landmasses with cars traveling on it, set against a backdrop of hills and a coastline—a perfect addition to your Jayapura itinerary.

Morning

  • At dawn, get ready for a bird watching thrill! At 4:30am, set-off on a forest trek to track-down the timid Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise, locally known as Cendrawasih Mati Kawat. This unique feathered marvel boasts a tail with twelve wire-like black feathers on a striking bluish-black body, with a splash of yellow feathers on its chest.
  • Next, continue to the playground of the Small Yellow-tailed Cendrawasih where you can enjoy close-up views of these playful birds. Just a hop away from this observation point, you’ll get to visit the King Bird of Paradise, a dazzling little bird with eye-catching red plumage.
  • The grand finale of your bird-watching adventure is a thrilling hunt to spot the elusive Curly-tailed Bird of Paradise. This little feathered dynamo is always on the move, making it the trickiest of all to find! Once you’ve had your fill of bird-watching excitement, head back to your homestay for a well-deserved breakfast and get ready to check-out.
  • Afterwards, make your way to Youtefa Bay to chill-out on the beach and admire the iconic Youtefa Bridge. This striking red bridge stretches a whopping 1,800 metres in length and 17 metres in width, and is graced with two majestic red steel arches.

Afternoon

A tranquil lake at sunset, surrounded by green hills and mountains, under a colorful sky with shades of orange, pink, and purple. Grass in the foreground frames the scenic view, making it a perfect addition to any Jayapura itinerary.

In the afternoon, make a quick stop at Jayapura City Peak where you’ll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of Jayapura and the surrounding ocean. Don’t linger too long though, as you’ve got a sunset rendezvous at Tungku Wiri Hill! However, on your way, make sure to take a moment to enjoy the impressive views of Lake Sentani’s vast waters. As you settle down on the green hills, relax as the sun sets over the horizon and take-in the peaceful atmosphere of Tungku Wiri Hill.
