American Hardwood Joins IFFINA+ 2025 Design Talks

Celebrating Karana – Where Global Materials Meet Local Stories. At this year’s IFFINA+ 2025, Design Talks once again became the place where design meets dialogue. One of the most anticipated moments was the debut of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) at the talks, presenting Karana – a collaboration between AHEC and Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata, Founder of Studio Hendro Hadinata.

The project Karana introduces a fresh approach to sustainable furniture in Indonesia, blending American hardwoods such as red oak, maple, and cherry with the soulful touch of local cultural narratives. Known for his storytelling approach to design, Hendro brings these materials to life through pieces inspired by Bali’s philosophy of Tri Hita Karana – harmony between people, nature, and spirituality.

The collection features three signature works:

  • Kuta Bench
  • Sanur Lounge Chair
  • Ubud Light

Each piece combines flowing, sculptural forms with modern function, creating designs that feel rooted in tradition yet ready for the global stage. The natural beauty of American red oak and cherry—with their warm hues, strength, and expressive grain—allowed Hendro to shape curves that feel organic, bold, and timeless.

“Working with American hardwood for the first time has been a revelation. The strength, finish, and natural character of the wood give me new creative freedom. Karana proves that global collaboration can enrich local narratives while showcasing Indonesian design internationally,” said Hendro Hadinata.

Behind the scenes, Hendro worked with local manufacturer Omega Mas, whose craftsmanship helped translate his flowing sketches into precise, contemporary forms—proof that sustainable materials and skilled artisans can create furniture that is both meaningful and functional.

AHEC also spotlighted its sustainability mission. Beyond aesthetics, American hardwood has a remarkably low carbon footprint. Each tree stores carbon as it grows, and forests in the U.S. regenerate so quickly that the volume harvested for projects like Karana is replaced in mere seconds.

Dennis Pluemer, Founder of Santai Furniture, joined the conversation to share his perspective:

“Today’s consumers care about the story behind their furniture. Choosing responsibly sourced materials like American hardwood gives brands the edge to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly design—both locally and globally,” he said.

With Karana, AHEC not only introduces a material but also celebrates a way of thinking: sustainability and culture walking hand in hand. The project signals a new direction for Indonesian furniture—where creativity, responsibility, and heritage come together to shape the future of design.
