Indonesian Independence Day 2026

Indonesian Independence Day 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, commemorating the proclamation made by Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta on 17 August 1945.

Across the country, the celebration is filled with patriotic ceremonies, cultural performances, community games, parades, and special events. Cities, towns, and villages decorate streets with the red-and-white Indonesian flag, while schools, businesses, and government institutions take part in flag-raising ceremonies. Traditional competitions such as sack races (balap karung), cracker-eating contests (lomba makan kerupuk), and climbing the greased pole (panjat pinang) are also popular highlights.

For 2026, Independence Day falls on Monday, 17 August 2026, making it an ideal time for long weekend celebrations, festivals, and tourism events throughout Indonesia. Many destinations, including Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and other regions, are expected to host cultural festivals, concerts, culinary events, and family-friendly activities in honour of the occasion.
