What started as a longing for the flavours of home has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s biggest Indian restaurant groups. But for founder Shilpa Dave, it’s never just been about serving great food – it’s about keeping traditions alive, one plate at a time.

Everyone has that one meal that tastes like home. For Shilpa Dave, it was the aromatic flavours she grew up with in Delhi. After moving to Indonesia, she found herself missing the dishes she’d eaten since childhood – the comforting curries, freshly baked breads and recipes that had been passed down through generations.

So, in 2003, she decided to do something about it.

That decision led to the opening of the very first Ganesha Ek Sanskriti restaurant in Jakarta. More than two decades later, what began as a personal passion has grown into one of Southeast Asia’s largest Indian restaurant groups, with venues spanning Jakarta, Bali, and Yogyakarta. Yet despite its success, the heart of the business hasn’t changed.

Serving more than just great food

Shilpa has always believed that food tells a story. Every recipe reflects a family’s traditions. Every region has its own signature flavours. And every shared meal offers a glimpse into a culture that goes far beyond what’s on the plate. That’s exactly what inspired the name Ek Sanskriti, meaning “One Culture”.

Rather than simply opening another Indian restaurant, Shilpa wanted to create a place where guests could experience the warmth, generosity and rich culinary heritage of India from the moment they sat down.

It’s an idea that’s shaped the restaurants from day one and continues to welcome everyone from homesick expats to visitors discovering Indian cuisine for the very first time.

The pursuit of perfection

Anyone can follow a recipe, but recreating the flavours you grew up with is entirely another story. From the beginning, Shilpa set herself a simple challenge: if a dish wouldn’t taste right back home in India, it wouldn’t make it onto Ganesha’s menu.

That commitment has meant paying close attention to every ingredient and every cooking technique. Some ingredients are imported, while others, like fresh yoghurt and paneer, are prepared in-house to achieve the flavour and texture traditional recipes rely on.

It might sound like a lot of effort, but for Shilpa, those little details are exactly what make the difference – and what makes Ganesha Ek Sanskriti’s food so authentic.

There’s a whole world beyond the classics

If you’ve only ever ordered Butter Chicken and garlic naan, don’t worry – you’re definitely not alone. But one thing Shilpa hopes every guest leaves Ganesha with is a curiosity to try something new.

India is home to an extraordinary range of regional cuisines, each with its own ingredients, spices and cooking traditions. A dish from Delhi can be completely different to one served hundreds of kilometres away in southern India.

That’s why the menus at Ganesha Ek Sanskriti go far beyond the favourites most of us already know. Whether it’s colourful street-food snacks, fragrant biryanis, smoky tandoor dishes or comforting regional curries, every visit offers another opportunity to discover something delicious.

Meet the faces behind the flavours

One of the things that makes Ganesha Ek Sanskriti stand out is the people behind the kitchen. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Shilpa has brought together chefs with expertise in different regional styles of Indian cooking.

Some have spent years mastering the tandoor, while others specialise in curries, biryanis or the distinctive dishes found in South India. And it’s that combination of knowledge that helps ensure each recipe stays true to the traditions that inspired it.

Ganesha’s story continues…

Expanding from a single restaurant into a nationally recognised brand doesn’t happen overnight. Over the past twenty-plus years, Ganesha Ek Sanskriti has continued to grow while staying true to the core values it was founded on: honest food, genuine hospitality and a deep respect for India’s culinary heritage.

Today, the restaurants welcome locals, travellers and Indian expats alike, each arriving for their own reasons but often leaving with the same appreciation for just how diverse Indian cuisine really is. And for Shilpa, that’s perhaps the greatest reward of all.

Because while the business has grown far beyond anything she imagined back in 2003, her original goal hasn’t changed. She simply wanted to bring a little taste of home to Indonesia.

More than twenty years on, Shilpa is still doing exactly that – while inspiring countless others to fall in love with the flavours, traditions and stories that make Indian cuisine so extraordinary. It turns out that a taste of home can go a very long way!
